The front lock hardware, secured by four rivets on the front Turnlock lock plate, employs hand-forged solid brass rivets rather than machine-pressed tubular rivets or Chicago screws.
The fabrication sequence proceeds as follows: precision hole punching, installation of thin reinforcing cowhide lining inside the bag — a critical procedure. Light ostrich leather has limited thickness; without reinforcement, sustained tension from rivets will pull the leather and cause cracking across pores. The rivet penetrates the outer ostrich hide, reinforcing backing leather and inner lining, then the protruding end is hand hammered and flared on the reverse side to achieve permanent fastening.
Visually, the top surface of front rivets remains flat, retaining subtle natural marks from manual forging. The flared rivet heads on the interior are smooth and uniform, eliminating sharp edges that may scratch the lining.
A key challenge with light ostrich leather lies in hole dimension control. Excessively large holes will gradually expand and trigger tearing originating from rivet positions. Shebag’s craftsmanship maintains hole clearance below 0.15mm.
Alignment standards for installation demand symmetrical horizontal height of the two D-rings, with hardware bases fully seated against leather without suspended warping. Warped bases are a typical flaw of low-grade replicas; continuous swinging friction will abrade the pores on ostrich leather.
Light-toned ostrich leather contains lighter natural oils, suffers weaker oxidation resistance, and is prone to staining by substances leached from metal. Two protective procedures are implemented during assembly.
Isolation treatment between hardware and leather surface is applied. An isolating coating is pre-coated on rivet bases and hardware backplates where they contact ostrich hide. This prevents prolonged direct contact between brass and light leather, which would form verdigris stains and yellowish discoloration surrounding hardware. Once light ostrich leather is stained, marks are extremely difficult to remove. Many manufacturers skip this step, resulting in yellow rings around rivets on Milk White and Glacier White bags after half a year of use.
Ostrich leather possesses different toughness properties compared to Epsom cowhide, so rivet hammering force is strictly regulated. Excessive compression crushes ostrich pores and creates dark circular indentations, highly noticeable on light-hued bags. Shebag artisans perform shaping through repeated light tapping; single heavy compression will leave permanent ring marks.
Regarding hardware substrate and plating, top-tier units adopt solid brass with heavy plating finishes, available in gold-tone and silver-tone without cheap alloy materials. All hardware edges receive manual chamfering and polishing to remove sharp burrs that could cut the outer layer of ostrich leather.
