Raw material selection is the most overlooked yet crucial process that most ordinary factories simplify. Only imported tanned Grade A Nile crocodile belly leather is adopted, with all hides featuring scars, folds, bone protrusions and color differences completely eliminated. The complete belly skin of one Nile crocodile can only be used for the main panel of a single Birkin bag.
The side panels, bag base and flap are strictly matched in scale orientation to present an overall symmetrical visual effect. Any leather with uneven scale sizes or insect bite marks will be directly discarded, resulting in extremely high material loss and explaining the premium value of the finished bags. The imported raw leather is first conditioned at a constant temperature for 24 hours to soften the internal leather fibers. Two classic finishes are available for selection, including glossy Lisse and matte Matte. After cutting, the edges of all leather pieces are roughly polished to remove burrs and ensure a neat foundation for subsequent processing.
Layered lining and raised shaping structure constitute the core of the standard Birkin three-dimensional silhouette. Unlike ordinary factory products that only use a single thin leather layer and appear soft and shapeless, Shebag adopts a three-layer composite structure composed of Nile crocodile outer leather, imported high-density reinforcing core and premium goat or sheepskin inner lining. Local raised shaping is implemented on the side panels and bag base, with adhesive applied in thin segmented layers to prevent the leather from hardening and avoid bulging problems caused by thick full-coat glue. All components are naturally air-dried and shaped for 48 hours, and high-temperature drying is strictly prohibited to prevent crocodile leather from peeling and discoloring.
Edge finishing and exclusive Cr12 chisel with two-stage punching technology are the core highlights of Shebag’s craftsmanship. Crocodile leather is much harder than ordinary cowhide, and ordinary iron chisels will easily tear the scales during punching. The Cr12MoV quenched die steel chisel features high hardness and long-lasting sharp cutting edges, creating smooth and neat hole walls without squeezing or damaging the root of crocodile scales. In contrast, inferior ordinary steel chisels used in low-cost workshops leave rough hole edges, leading to cracking along pin holes after long-term use. The professional two-stage punching process sets a clear industry standard, with preliminary shallow punching for positioning and fine tension adjustment for accurate deep forming. Single-pass punching will cause skewed and unevenly spaced pin holes due to the uneven fiber tension of crocodile leather. All finished pin holes are evenly spaced with smooth round openings and vertically penetrate the leather. The standard stitch density for Birkin bags is 5 to 6 stitches per centimeter, with all positions manually calibrated without mechanical pre-punching.
All bags are sewn with traditional French saddle stitching, which guarantees excellent durability. Crafted with wax-impregnated linen thread and double-needle double-line stitching, the process features two independent stitching directions. Even if one side of the thread breaks, the entire seam will not loosen or unravel. The tension of all exposed stitches is uniform and stable, with manual fine adjustment at all corners to prevent scale warping and peeling caused by leather pulling.
