The handle assembly of the Hermès Lindy 26, consisting of dual top handles and a detachable shoulder strap, is fundamentally crafted through fully manual saddle stitching, multi-layer leather lamination and hardware reinforcement. The entire workflow from material selection to final finishing takes approximately six to eight hours, completed entirely by a single dedicated artisan throughout the whole process.

Primary leather material mainly adopts Taurillon Clemence cowhide, with alternative options including Evercolor and Swift leather. Only mature bull hide is selected for its full grain texture and outstanding tensile resilience, ensuring the handle retains its shape perfectly even after prolonged carrying. The inner structure of the handle is reinforced with matching thin cowhide combined with high-density fibre padding, delivering a balanced rigidity and flexibility that prevents sagging over extended use. Stitching is executed with premium waxed linen thread from France’s Fil Au Chinois, constructed with three linen strands infused with natural beeswax and measuring 0.55 to 0.6 millimetres in diameter. The thread offers superior waterproof and abrasion resistance, developing a subtle natural patina with regular use. Hardware components are forged from German brass plated with 24-karat gold or palladium, while rivets and base fittings are made of solid copper and secured entirely by hand hammering.

Raw leather panels for the dual top handles are precision cut manually following custom metal templates, producing four individual pieces comprising two outer face panels and two inner lining panels, with careful alignment to maintain consistent grain symmetry and flawless surface integrity. Every edge is trimmed to a 45-degree angle using an edge beveler, creating a smooth rounded contour that delivers comfortable grip and avoids sharp edges.

The outer leather layer, reinforcing padding and inner lining layer are laminated together with eco-friendly adhesive in a seamless application, eliminating air bubbles and positional misalignment. After lamination, the assembly is placed on a curved wooden mould for compression shaping, forming an ergonomic arc that perfectly fits the natural holding angle of the human hand for comfortable contact without discomfort.

Pre-stitching perforations are punched using Vergez Blanchard diamond chisels, maintaining a standard hole spacing of 3.85 millimetres equivalent to fourteen stitches per inch. Each aperture is positioned with a 45-degree needle entry angle, ensuring vertical alignment and precise hole positioning without deviation.

The core construction relies on traditional dual-needle saddle stitching, utilising size 2/0 round-tip leather needles with waxed thread threaded through both ends. Two needles pass alternately through the same perforation from opposite sides, forming a symmetrical double-sided X-shaped stitch pattern. All stitches follow a uniform right-to-left and downward inclined trajectory with consistent thread tension, allowing each stitch to bear structural force independently. This design prevents widespread unravelling even if a single thread snaps, granting the finished piece a service lifespan of over thirty years. Reinforced triple stitching is applied bidirectionally at the joint between the handle and the bag body to resist tension and prevent cracking at stress points.

The bottom end of each handle connects to the bag’s side tab structure, fixed firmly with four solid copper rivets set and hammered manually. Natural hammer marks remain visible along the rivet edges as an authentic signature of hand craftsmanship. All perimeters undergo manual edge finishing and concealed thread closure, with loose ends tucked into the inner leather layers to achieve a clean finish free of exposed fraying.

The detachable shoulder strap adopts the same craftsmanship standard as the top handles. Structurally, it features a single wide leather band of two centimetres in width with double-layer reinforced end sections, crafted to a hanging length of around twenty-seven centimetres suitable for shoulder wear. The full length is finished with single-row saddle stitching, with both ends fitted with metal clasps matching the bag’s hardware specification and fastened by hand-set rivets for quick detachment. The strap fastens securely onto the inner metal rings of the top handles, enabling flexible conversion between hand-held and shoulder-carried modes without compromising the structural integrity of the original handle design.

Key craftsmanship benchmarks serve as core authentication criteria for genuine production standards. Stitch spacing strictly adheres to 3.85 millimetres per hole at fourteen stitches per inch, maintaining even distribution without irregular density variation. The waxed thread presents a matte and slightly textured surface formed by manual manipulation, distinct from the glossy finish produced by mechanical stitching. Hand-hammered rivets display a naturally indented base with organic hammered contours around the edges, lacking the perfectly flat uniform surface of machine-stamped fittings. The ergonomic curve of the handle is shaped entirely by hand, achieving left-right symmetry without rigid mirror duplication, retaining the subtle irregularities inherent to artisanal work.

All production tools and supporting suppliers comply with official Hermès atelier specifications. Diamond chisels, pricking awls and stitch groovers are sourced from Vergez Blanchard, the French heritage manufacturer established in 1823 as a long-standing exclusive supplier to Hermès. Leather hand needles are supplied by John James from the United Kingdom, recognised for smooth round-tip design with burr-free precision. Premium waxed linen thread is exclusively provided by France-based Fil Au Chinois. All hardware components utilise German brass with palladium or 24-karat gold plating, paired with solid copper rivets for structural assembly.
