This exclusive mini workshop of Shebag only uses grade A full-belly Niloticus crocodile leather. The qualified leather meets international cross zoning standards with flawless surfaces, uniform square scales and neat and regular pores. Adhering to the original EPV exotic leather cutting standards of Hermès, the workshop implements fully manual processing with zero mechanical die-cutting.
The complete cutting workflow covers six rigorous and standardized core procedures, including leather selection and layout, pre-cut leather surface protection, flesh-side material cutting, individual leather thinning and reinforcement, cut piece shaping and edge trimming, as well as grain alignment and inspection, with strict detailed specifications for every processing step.
In terms of manual grain alignment and layout for Niloticus crocodile leather cutting, only the complete rectangular scaled area in the middle section of the crocodile belly is adopted, while the head, tail, narrow scale areas on both sides and armpit folded parts of the hide are all discarded. Only 30% of a complete crocodile hide can be used to produce the main body of Birkin and Kelly bags, and secondary smooth belly areas are independently selected for making small accessories such as bag handles and lock covers. Leather blocks with calcification traces, pinholes, hidden damages and uneven scale sizes are strictly forbidden for production. The leather grading standards stipulate that the scale width is uniformly controlled at 2 to 3 centimeters with equidistant vertical and horizontal square scales. All pores on each cut piece are vertically aligned, and the textures on both sides are completely symmetrical without irregular patterns.
There are strict directional layout rules for leather grain. For the front and rear large panels of the bag, the vertical scale lines are perpendicular to the bag bottom to ensure continuous upward and downward scale flow, and the left and right panels are designed with mirror symmetrical textures. The side gussets and bottom panels adopt horizontal scale arrangement to avoid visual disjointing caused by diagonal grain cutting. The edges of paper patterns are never allowed to press on the gaps between scales, and must be placed on the solid middle part of scales, so as to prevent cracking caused by pulling and chipping of the high-gloss paint surface. During the layout process, paper patterns are continuously adjusted and fine-tuned to ensure that the scale density and gloss shade of all cut pieces for a single bag have no distinguishable difference to the naked eye, and any leather with unqualified color difference will be discarded directly.
Targeted temporary protection is implemented for different leather surfaces. The surface of glossy Lisse Niloticus crocodile leather is fully covered with matte PE protective film before cutting, and all cuts are made from the flesh side to prevent tool scratches on the glossy glaze layer. For matte Niloticus crocodile leather, a special flocked soft pad is laid on the workbench for isolation, avoiding surface abrasion and matte particle damage caused by friction.
All material cutting processes are purely manual without the use of stamping machines. Brand-new medical carbon steel scalpels are uniformly used for cutting, and the blade is replaced after cutting every three pieces to ensure cutting precision. All cutting operations are performed with the leather flesh side facing upward, with the blade cutting at a 45-degree oblique angle. Each complete contour is finished in one single smooth cut, and repeated back-and-forth cutting that pulls leather fibers is prohibited. This is because the fibers at the root of Niloticus crocodile scales are brittle and prone to invisible internal cracks from repeated cutting.
Strict dimensional tolerance control is implemented throughout processing. The paper pattern is pre-reserved with a 0.15mm margin, and precise edge trimming is conducted after cutting, keeping the length and width tolerance of all cut pieces within 0.05mm. Extra stitching allowance is reserved for Sellier exterior-stitch cut pieces, while Retourne inner-fold cut pieces are trimmed inward. The two types of styles are cut separately and stored in classified baskets without mixing. All bag components including main body panels, side panels, bottom panels, handle leather, lock covers, clochette bell leather and shoulder strap leather are cut into independent single pieces instead of connected blanks. The flesh side of each cut piece is marked with serial numbers, left-right distinction and scale orientation with a marker pen to avoid stitching misalignment in subsequent processes.
