Every step of the full manufacturing process, ranging from raw hide tanning, pattern cutting, skiving, lamination, stitching, edge finishing to polishing, is entirely distinct from workflows for regular cowhide. The core challenges stem from exotic leathers featuring inherent osteoderms, scales, uneven grain textures and unique fiber structures, leaving almost no room for errors.

When it comes to raw hide tanning, this marks the most fundamental dividing line between the two materials.

Conventional cowhide including calfskin, Togo and Epsom is sourced from bovine mammals with evenly distributed fibers and no rigid bony plates or scales. It only undergoes basic depilation, liming and softening treatments.

The full tanning cycle lasts four to six weeks on standard assembly lines that combine vegetable and chrome tanning agents.

The standardized workflow consists of soaking, hair removal, liming, softening, pickling, tanning, dyeing and simple fatliquoring, with no special impurity removal procedures required.

More than seventy percent of a whole cowhide can be utilised for production. Such hides carry minimal blemishes and consistent colour tones are easy to maintain.

Its fibers are fine and uniform with low tensile strength and no raised rigid formations.

Raw cowhide materials follow this streamlined processing route entirely.

Exotic leathers adopted by Shebag cover Nile crocodile, saltwater crocodile, ostrich and lizard hides. All reptilian skins come equipped with scale armour, subcutaneous osteoderms and natural pigment deposits, requiring three exclusive procedures never applied to cowhide.

Scale removal and decalcification is a step unique to crocodile leather. Workers repeatedly soak the hides, treat them with alkaline solutions, re-lime the material and soften it through salt washing to dissolve hard calcium deposits beneath the scales. Without this treatment, the leather will turn stiff and impossible to fold.

Deep pigment elimination uses redox bleaching to erase natural discoloration trapped between scales and prevent mottled staining after dyeing, a stage completely omitted for cowhide.

Graded slow-release tanning takes six to eight months at low temperatures. This gentle process preserves the three-dimensional relief of scales while softening the hard subcutaneous layers, whereas regular cowhide can be rapidly tanned under high heat.

Only twelve to twenty percent of a complete crocodile hide is usable. Intact symmetrical square panels from the belly are extremely scarce, while back, flank and tail sections are discarded outright.

Reptilian hides contain densely interwoven collagen fibers twice as strong as those in cowhide, yet their highly uneven grain creates inconsistent tension distribution across the material.

This describes the tanning process for raw crocodile hides, which ultimately develop the distinctive textured grain seen on finished crocodile leather goods.

Pattern cutting techniques further highlight the zero-tolerance four-way segmentation rule enforced for exotic hides.

Cutting standard cowhide relies on mechanical stencils with machine-assisted marking lines, with workers only avoiding minor natural grain lines.

There are loose regulations for symmetry and splicing; large hide panels can be cut freely thanks to high error tolerance.

Aligning natural grain patterns is unnecessary, as long as the leather surface stays smooth.

For crocodile leather, the cross four-way segmentation method is implemented: craftsmen only select perfectly symmetrical square panels from the centre of the belly, ensuring the size and gradual shade of scales on the left and right sides form an exact mirror image. All back, side and tail hide sections are thrown away.

Unidirectional grain locking mandates that scales on every cut piece grow uniformly upward. Grain patterns on the bag body, flap and handles remain continuous, and reversed splicing is prohibited, a rule irrelevant to cowhide production.

Entirely manual blanking bans die stamping machinery, as the pressure from metal dies crushes subcutaneous osteoderms and triggers cracked scales. Artisans slowly slice each piece individually using professional hand cutting knives.

Material waste control is critical: one Birkin 25 bag requires one to two full crocodile belly hides, while a single sheet of regular cowhide can yield three to four bags of the identical size.

These specifications apply to all hand-cut components crafted from exotic leather.

Skiving, known as thinning, and backing lamination treatments also separate the two leather categories significantly.

Standard cowhide undergoes uniform machine skiving to an even thickness of 0.6 to 0.8 millimetres, with matching fiber structures on both the front and reverse sides.

A generic woven textile lining is bonded using ordinary water-based adhesive under cold pressure for thirty minutes until fully shaped.

Only single-sided skiving is needed for folded edges and spliced joints, and multiple stacked layers do not create unsightly bulges.

Shebag handles exotic leathers with differentiated layered skiving: raised scale sections are thinly pared while thicker material is retained within scale gaps to retain a three-dimensional surface without collapse. Machine skiving would grind away the distinctive scale grain, so all edge thinning must be completed by hand.

A crack-resistant base pre-coat is brushed onto all cut edges and the reverse side. Beeswax filler seals gaps between osteoderms to stop scales splitting during folding, a preparatory step unnecessary for cowhide.

Special imported flexible adhesive addresses the tendency of rigid osteoderm layers to delaminate. Workers apply two thin coats with slow compression and leave the material to rest for no less than two hours. Handles and bag corners receive double reinforced imported fibreglass backing to absorb stress on bony scale layers.

Spliced joints feature ultra-graduated skiving tapered down to a 0.1-millimetre ultra-thin transition zone, eliminating raised bumps along seams where scale panels meet.
