Shebag adopts the same production standards as Hermès’ exotic leather ateliers. Lizard skin features thin, delicate surface scales prone to cracking, so its stitching process integrates exclusive pre-treatment solutions for exotic leathers paired with fully handcrafted saddle stitching, which stands out distinctly from the techniques used for cowhide and crocodile leather. The complete workflow consists of four major stages: preliminary leather preparation, hole punching, stitching, and post-sewing shaping and finishing.

Special pre-treatment procedures exclusive to lizard leather before sewing serve as the core guarantee to stop scales from splitting along stitch lines. Lizard skin only measures 1.0 to 1.3 millimeters in thickness with weakly adhered scales. Direct punching will trigger widespread scale shedding and tearing, hence Shebag implements three dedicated pre-processing steps. A reinforcing lining is bonded to the reverse side of the hide. Ultra-thin imported lambskin lining or non-woven fabric is attached to the leather’s interior to disperse tension from stitching, stopping scales from lifting and surface tearing when holes are pierced. Double layers of reinforcement are applied to high-tension areas including bag corners, top handles and bag openings.

The leather edges are layered and thinly beveled to a 0.3-millimeter sloped finish. Sloped chamfers are created at joint sections to ensure uniform thickness after two layers of leather are stacked, eliminating scale pulling caused by uneven material thickness. Unlike the deep skiving used for crocodile leather, only extremely light skiving can be performed on lizard skin to avoid base layer exposure and scale loss. Grooving creates recessed channels for stitching. A miniature grooving tool carves shallow channels along the stitching path to embed threads beneath the leather surface, preventing raised stitches from abrading the glossy top glaze of lizard hide during daily use. Channel depth is strictly limited to 0.15 millimeters, as deeper grooves will penetrate the scale layer entirely.

The hole punching procedure relies on custom chisels made exclusively for exotic leather, differing from standard tools for regular leather goods. Custom miniature fine-tooth chisels with a 0.6-millimeter tooth width are deployed, compared to the 0.8 to 1.0-millimeter chisels for ordinary cowhide. Stitch spacing is fixed at 3.8 to 4 millimeters, equivalent to 2.5 stitches per centimeter; smaller holes greatly reduce the risk of scale damage. Rounded holes are individually punched at all corners to eliminate stress cracks stemming from sharp right-angle perforations.

Punching is executed vertically with gentle taps. A soft rubber mat lines the work surface, and only light strikes with a wooden mallet are permitted while heavy force stamping is forbidden. The leather is secured beforehand to prevent shifting, and all holes are aligned strictly along gaps between scales—punches are never driven straight through raised scale ridges to avoid scale detachment. Pre-hole expansion is carried out for extra protection. After punching, a fine awl slightly widens each hole to stop waxed thread from scraping or lifting the glossy surface glaze of the lizard skin during threading.

The core sewing technique adopted is fully hand-executed saddle stitching, also known as Point Sellier, a dual-needle single-thread method. This signature craftsmanship defines all lizard leather bags from Shebag, with every stitch completed manually rather than by sewing machines, perfectly accommodating lizard hide’s low tear resistance. Waxed linen threads infused with beeswax are selected as sewing materials. High-twist linen cord is repeatedly hand-coated with natural beeswax to deliver waterproof, wear-resistant performance and moderate surface friction. Thread thickness is matched to the leather type; only fine 0.35-millimeter waxed threads are used for lizard skin, as thicker cords will stretch and split the perforations in the scales. Thread color is precisely color-matched to each bag’s hide: monochromatic matching threads are used for matte lizard leather, while subtle contrasting threads on glossy lizard accentuate the natural granular texture of the scales. The dual-needle threading method operates with one fine steel needle threaded onto each end of a single cord, with both needles fed through the identical hole from opposite sides in a bidirectional crossing motion.

Visually, the technique forms uniform 45-degree slanted pearl-shaped bead stitches on both sides of the leather, full and consistent with none of the flat, uneven seams produced by industrial machines. Structurally, the stitch retains full integrity even if one segment of thread snaps, making it ideal for frequently pulled components such as top handles and bag openings. Tension is evenly controlled with force calibrated specifically for lizard leather. Artisans maintain gentle pulling tension throughout sewing and avoid tight straining that warps the hide. While cowhide can be pulled taut for shaping, excessive tension on lizard skin stretches perforations and causes large swathes of scales to lift. After every three to five stitches, the leather surface is lightly pressed to flatten displaced scales back into place. Reinforced corner stitching is applied at the four base corners of the bag, flap turns and handle connection points with overlapping backstitching that runs twice through each hole for enhanced strength. However, dense clusters of perforations are avoided to prevent embrittlement and cracking of the leather at concentrated hole sites.

Once saddle stitching is complete, the stitches are flattened and polished. A smooth wooden burnisher gently rolls over all seams to fully sink waxed threads into pre-carved grooves, aligning pearl stitches neatly against the leather surface and removing sharp raised edges. Thread ends are secured internally with no loose threads exposed externally. All thread tails are tucked into the layered reinforcing lining within the leather sandwich, trimmed short after knotting, and fixed with a tiny drop of leather adhesive to lock knots permanently. No loose threads are left on the exterior to prevent abrasive friction against lizard scales. Minorly lifted scales that appear during sewing are reset by light pressing with a low-temperature heat wand. Upon finishing all stitching work for a full bag, an ultra-thin layer of transparent glaze formulated exclusively for lizard leather is applied over the entire piece to seal perforations, blocking water penetration and preventing scale shedding. Edge finishing is coordinated to complement the stitching process. Given the thin profile of lizard skin, seven thin coats of water-based resin are layered onto cut edges, with sanding and polishing carried out between each coat. Seamless transitions are crafted where edge finishing meets stitching tracks, eliminating raised ledges that would rub against the delicate scales.
