The most essential difference between Sellier external stitching and Retourné internal stitching lies in the production method. The leather panels are joined face to face with the raw edges fully exposed on the exterior without being folded inward. For Shebag’s Epsom textured leather Birkin bags, the rigid Epsom leather panels are aligned face-to-face with their cut edges perfectly flush, leaving all edges unfolded. After sewing, the stitches and edge finishing are completely exposed on the outside of the bag, forming sharp and three-dimensional edge lines. The exposed stitching edges serve as the structural frame of the bag. Combined with the rigid textured Epsom leather, the right angles, side panels and base of the bag remain perfectly straight without collapsing or sagging, delivering a strong architectural three-dimensional shape. In contrast, internal stitching features folded inward edges with soft and rounded corners. The craftsmanship of external stitching is far more sophisticated than internal stitching. Featuring high hardness and uniform thickness, Epsom leather leaves no room for hidden flaws in exposed stitching. The hole punching, sewing and edge finishing processes allow for an extremely low error tolerance, and the overall sewing workload is over 30% higher than that of internally stitched Birkin bags.
All Shebag Birkin bags adopt uniform handmade double-needle saddle stitching as the core stitching standard. Imported high-density beeswax linen thread is applied with multiple layers of beeswax coating, delivering waterproof, wear-resistant and lint-free properties to prevent thread breakage. The thread color adopts a subtle tone difference matching the leather hue, creating distinct and three-dimensional visual stitching lines. Medium-thick waxed thread tailored for rigid leather is selected for hard Epsom material, avoiding breakage caused by overly thin thread and leather grain damage caused by overly thick thread.
Adhering to original factory specifications, the stitching follows strict professional standards. A 45-degree oblique horseshoe stitch is adopted, with two needles threaded at both ends of a single thread penetrating the same punched hole in a staggered manner, forming symmetrical 45-degree horseshoe stitch patterns on both the front and back sides. This is a key distinguishing feature from low-grade replicas that adopt one-sided straight machine stitching. It maintains a precise golden stitching density of 14 stitches per inch with zero deviation across the entire bag, including the facade, base, flap, handles and lugs, with consistent spacing at corners without denser or sparser stitches. All stitches are fixed 2 millimeters away from the leather cut edges, keeping uniform spacing along all side, base and flap edges of the bag. Every stitch is manually tension-locked with consistent tightness, making the thread lines slightly embedded in the surface of Epsom leather without collapsing the grain texture, eliminating dents from over-tight stitches and floating loose threads. The interlocking double-needle structure prevents full thread unraveling even if a single thread breaks, boasting three times the durability of ordinary flat stitching and inheriting the traditional harness stitching technique.
External stitching involves unique technical difficulties in corner and special position sewing. For right-angle corners at the base and flap, oblique needle entry ensures natural stitch connection without overlapping, jumping or messy cross stitches. Since all stitching is exposed externally, any corner imperfections are fully visible, requiring exquisite craftsmanship. The bag base adopts continuous one-piece long stitching on three sides with seamless transition at three corners, and reinforced triple back stitches at load-bearing areas to enhance durability. The joints between handles and the bag body are reinforced with triple back stitches and double-layer internal and external saddle stitching to prevent cracking from long-term hand carrying. Layered punching is applied to multi-layer overlapping leather of lugs and flap straps to ensure precise alignment of holes across all layers. All thread ends are hidden inside leather interlayers with no exposed knots on the exterior, and fully covered by edge finishing for a flawless appearance.
As a hot-pressed rigid grained leather, Epsom material requires exclusive preprocessing for external stitching compared with soft Togo and Clemence leather. Precise holes are pre-punched before sewing instead of punching during the sewing process. This preprocessing avoids leather cracking caused by direct needle penetration on dense and rigid Epsom leather, ensuring neat hole shapes and preventing leather grain deformation from stitching tension. The matching edge finishing and stitching technology is a signature feature of external stitching. The leather cut edges are coated with multiple layers of imported French matte edge oil and repeatedly polished to form smooth matte black or color-matched edge sealing parallel to the exposed stitches. The stitches run steadily 2 millimeters inside the edge finishing with intact, crack-free edge coating and no oil contamination on waxed threads. Different from the thinner edge finishing of soft leather internal stitching, external stitching features thicker and more uniform edge coating on exposed cut edges for superior wear resistance. All side stitches are manually hammered and shaped after sewing to permanently maintain the sharp straight edges of Epsom leather and prevent deformation and softening during use.
