How are the stitching techniques applied by Shebag on custom oversized Hermes Birkin bags in Epsom leather, and how do they differ from the standard craftsmanship of the regular 25cm and 30cm sizes?
Today, Shebag shares the professional stitching techniques behind our oversized Birkin bags and the full differences in stitching, leather processing and structural craftsmanship between the Shebag Hermes Birkin 45 Epsom and smaller 25cm, 30cm and 35cm models.
All Birkin bags adopt purely handmade saddle stitching with standard beeswax linen threads and uniform 45-degree angled stitches, maintaining consistent fundamental stitching logic across all sizes. However, the 45cm oversized Birkin features completely reinforced load-bearing stitching structures that are not applied to smaller sizes. Given its doubled self-weight and load capacity, the 45cm model is equipped with double-layer and dense backstitch reinforcements at key structural positions to enhance durability. The connection between the handle and the bag body marks the core craftsmanship difference. Smaller 25cm, 30cm and 35cm Epsom Sellier bags use single-layer leather tabs for handle connection, finished with a single round of standard saddle stitching and only one backstitch reinforcement at each corner. In contrast, the handle of the Birkin 45 bears 2.8 times the load of the 30cm version. It adopts double-layer stacked Epsom leather with lining reinforcement on the handle tabs, paired with double surrounding stitching and three overlapping locking backstitches at both the top and bottom ends. The stitch pitch is reduced by 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters compared with smaller bags, with more stitches per unit length to completely prevent tearing during handling and carrying.
Distinct differences can also be found in the stitching of the bag base and side gussets. Small-sized bags are constructed with three single-layer leather panels for the side gussets, sealed with a continuous single-round stitch and only simple backstitches at the four corners. The 45cm oversized bag features a widened and thickened full base leather panel with double-layer overlapping stitching at the joints between the base and side panels. Double rows of stitching run along the upper and lower edges of the side gussets, while smaller bags only have a single row. The entire base edge of the 45cm model uses denser stitches to avoid leather cracking caused by tension from heavy loads. Additionally, the hardware base stitching is upgraded for the oversized model. The bases of locks and hanging hooks on small bags are fixed with a single ring of stitching, while the 45cm bag adopts cross-shaped reinforced stitching with two locking backstitches on each side of the hardware base, effectively resisting vibration and tension from heavy item storage and movement.
Shebag adopts differentiated standards for Epsom leather cutting, folding and edge finishing based on bag sizes, as Epsom is a rigid embossed leather that requires tailored processing thickness and edging techniques for different dimensions. Standard 25cm and 30cm Sellier Epsom bags are made of 1.2mm single-layer Epsom leather without additional lining reinforcement, relying solely on the inherent hardness of the leather to maintain shape. The 45cm Epsom Birkin uses upgraded 1.4mm thickened Epsom leather for the main body, with thin cowhide lining added to the inner side of the bag base, side gussets and handle tabs to offset bending fatigue caused by the bag’s larger self-weight.
The folding width of Sellier exterior stitching serves as the most intuitive visual difference between sizes. Sellier exterior stitching features outward folded leather edges with exposed stitching lines. Small 25cm and 30cm bags have a narrow folding width of 4 to 5 millimeters, delivering a delicate silhouette with crisp and compact edges. The Birkin 45 uses an extended folding width of 7 to 8 millimeters. The widened folded edges effectively support the large rigid leather surface to prevent warping, while the broader exposed waxed stitching lines create a more robust and commanding visual texture.
There are also obvious disparities in edge finishing techniques. Small-sized bags only require two rounds of edge painting, polishing and buffing, as their shorter leather panels bear minimal bending stress. For the 45cm oversized bag, all spliced edges undergo three rounds of edge coating and two times of water grinding and sealing. An extra wear-resistant sealing layer is applied to the stressed edges of the base and handles. Thanks to the larger span of the leather panels, oversized bags are more prone to edge wear from frequent opening and closing, and the multi-layer sealing treatment greatly improves durability and prolongs the service life of the edges.
